A large proportion of our range is constructed using 100% Non-Metallic components.

This means that rather than using Steel toecaps, we use Fibreglass toecaps.

We don’t think anyone will ever stop asking ‘are they steel toecaps’. But we think they should.

Read on to learn more.

Overview

The differences, benefits, pros and cons between metallic and non-metallic toecaps are subjective. It’s been widely debated in the industry.

Fibreglass toecaps are manufactured in the same way as Steel ones, using a compression machine. Injection moulded thermoplastic toecaps have a different manufacturing method, to learn more look out for another article coming soon.

What's the difference?

Given the focus on, and importance of the toecap we have produced some tangible research on some of the most widely publicised features and benefits.

Fibreglass toecaps are wider fitting

We’ve done calculations looking at our Steel and Fibreglass toecaps and report the following data. Fibreglass toecaps give the wearer 26.5% more space for their feet*.

*calculation from circumference, height, radius and area.

Aren’t Steel toecaps stronger?

No, both Steel and Fibreglass toecaps that are certified to EN ISO 20345:2011 have been tested to 200J force of energy as per EN ISO 20344:2011 test methods.

Typically, when testing, Steel toecaps compress within tolerance, in our experience Fibreglass toecaps rebound and dissipate shock more effectively.

There is minimal research into the amount of force required to crush to failure either material. However, we can tell you that in that event a Steel toecap would crush leading to possible amputation, whereas a Fibreglass toecap would shatter.

Fibreglass toecaps are Impact tested after Thermal and Chemical Aging

Both toecaps are tested in line with EN 12568:2010 for 200J Impact testing.

It’s a little-known fact that Fibreglass toecaps are also Thermal Aged tested separately at both low (-20°C) and high (+60°C) then 200J Impact tested.

They are also separately exposed to Alkali, Acid and Fuel Oil and 200J Impact tested.

Fibreglass toecaps are non-conductive

The nature of the material means that Fibreglass toecaps are non-conductive of current or temperature.

Most importantly, current, Trackside, both under and overground it is much safer to use Fibreglass toecaps.

Steel toecaps get cold when it’s cold and in extreme temperatures get hot when it’s hot. Ask your wearers how it feels to put a pair of Steel toecaps on when they’ve been left out in the van during the cold months.

Fibreglass toecaps do not set off metal detectors

Perhaps an obvious point? Fibreglass toecaps do not contain metal so are less intrusive in airports or in the presence of other detectors or equipment.
